"TASLEEMA NASREEN" I saw this name for the first time when my younger brother brought home a red coloured novel that summer. That novel opened new avenues to me.when I finished reading the novel, it was late in the night and I found myself weeping uncontrollably. I just couldn't take in what ever was written in LAJJA.when I started reading about Nasreen, I found out that she is a controversial author, her books are banned in her home country and a Fatwa is issued upon her.
Though Nasreen is widely regarded as a Feminist, after reading her columns, I find that she is more of a Humanist than a a Feminist. The ability to fight against the oppression of a human being by another is what makes Nasreen a truly remarkable humanbeing. I understand that conservative Islamists regard her writings as anti muslim. "Is she against Islam or is she against the customs & traditions that snub a woman" is the question. Her fortitude in pointing out things irrespective of the consequences of her action, and her endurance of the fallacies about her are outstanding.
when Aungsaan suki fought for the people of her country, she was awarded the Nobel. but, Tasleema has to live a life of exile for standing for the rights of her fellow humans. Its time the Indian government honour this wonderful woman with the citizenship of the country.
